The Phaistos Disc is a round saucer-shaped item of fired clay that was discovered in 1908 in the Minoan palace of Phaistos, on the isle of Crete. Its exact age is unknown, but likely dates to the late Minoan Bronze Age. It is covered in stamped symbols in a spiral pattern on both sides. The German typesetter and linguist Herbert Brekle argues that the Phaistos Disc is an early document of movable type printing. While it shares some symbols with Linear A, an also-undeciphered script used more commonly by the ancient Minoans, it is distinct enough to be the only known example of this specific writing system.
